The head of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has stated that Bayelsa State plans to organize the 2028 National Sports Festival, according to The PUNCH.

Olopade visited Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa, on Monday to evaluate the state’s preparedness for hosting the biennial event.

“Today in Yenagoa, I had the honor of meeting with important stakeholders as Bayelsa State formally announced its plan to host the National Sports Festival in 2028,” Olopade stated.

Alongside the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, we talked about the state’s preparedness and aspirations for the festival. I also headed the team during an inspection of the facilities in Bayelsa as part of assessing their bid.

The National Sports Festival goes beyond being a contest; it is an event that honors unity, skill, and the prospects of Nigerian athletics. Bayelsa’s dedication is praiseworthy, and we anticipate what comes next.

If their proposal is successful, the state will be organizing the event for the first time.

Enugu has been confirmed as the venue for the upcoming event in 2026, following the conclusion of the 2024 edition that took place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, earlier this year.

In the meantime, Olopade also became involved in the suspension of Nigerian wrestler Amas Daniel, who has been prohibited from competing since 2023.

The NSC DG spoke to a group of young people who demonstrated against Daniel’s suspension and also arranged a meeting between the wrestler and the wrestling association.

We have managed to fix it. It was the federation imposing punishment on him for being disobedient. A straightforward apology to the federation would have settled it, but I am going to meet with them, and I believe it will be resolved.
