Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan, a leading biomedical scientist from Liberia, has been honored with the esteemed African Genius Award 2025 in recognition of his innovative work in the fields of science, medicine, and technology.

Nyan is one of 16 recipients chosen from over 100 applicants across Africa. The winners, hailing from nations such as Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria, were honored for their accomplishments in fields like medicine, science, and the humanities.

We aim to honor African accomplishments. Many of them are highly skilled, and it’s astonishing,” stated Dr. Mmusi Maimane, the host of this year’s ceremony. “We hope you will stand with us in recognizing outstanding Africans.

In his acceptance speech, Nyan referred to the award as a reflection of African pride and persistence. “It is a privilege to receive the African Genius Award 2025 and to be recognized alongside many creative Africans,” he mentioned. “I view this award as a representation of our African heritage, strength, dedication, and bravery.”

Nyan, the Director General of Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), is globally recognized for developing the Rapid Multiplex Isothermal Diagnostic Test (NYAN-TEST), capable of identifying various infectious diseases within an hour. This affordable and user-friendly device has secured three U.S. patents.

Recently, Nyan headed a group of researchers in discovering the Mpox Clade IIa in Liberia, marking the first time this strain has been found in the country since monkeypox was first identified there in 1970.

Originating in South Africa, the African Genius Award recognizes Africans whose contributions promote self-governance, respect, and outstanding achievement across the continent. Collaborating institutions are the University of Johannesburg, Plus-94 Research, Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute, The African Dream, and Brandhill Africa.

“We are proud to acknowledge your contributions and honor the excellence, creativity, and guidance you embody,” stated the AGA nomination letter addressed to Nyan.

Under Nyan’s guidance, NPHIL has been acknowledged as a Regional Center of Excellence by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This recent honor joins his extensive collection of accolades, such as the African Innovation Award (2017), the Ward Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Medicine, and Liberia’s Humane Order of African Redemption.
