A seal observed on Rathlin Island featuring black markings around its neck is under observation by authorities.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) stated that it is making visits to the island every two weeks to monitor the animal, which is currently considered “healthy and alert.”
It was initially brought to the attention of Exploris Aquarium in August, although head keeper Euan Morrison mentioned that there are some accounts suggesting the seal has had the tube around it for several months.
He mentioned that there are multiple difficulties involved in the process of eliminating it.
“We might consider chasing it and attempting to capture it, but if we do so, it will vanish into the water. It won’t end well for the seal if it falls asleep out there,” Mr. Morrison stated.

Mr. Morrison mentioned that individuals attempting to capture the seal would have to “basically” leap onto it, which would necessitate being very near.
“At this moment, it appears excessively strong and well, resting at the water’s edge,” he stated.
We won’t even come within a few hundred meters of it, let alone touch it.
Mr. Morrison stated that this is positive news, as although the pipe is present, the seal appears “very healthy.”
“It’s displaying all the indicators we’re eager to observe; head raised, tail raised, it appears healthy and plump,” he stated.
The guardian mentioned that the seal seemed to be hunting effectively and had not exhibited any indications of slowing down, even with the tube.

A representative from Daera stated that they are “working closely with Exploris to explore possible intervention strategies when the circumstances permit.”
Exploris has determined the seal to be in good health and alert. When combined with the presence of other seals nearby, this makes any intervention efforts challenging to carry out without causing a broader disturbance to the colony, which could lead to injuries.
Authorities are still keeping an eye on the circumstances and have asked members of the public to report any additional sightings.
