TheThe head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has praised broadcaster and producer Gbolahan Macjob for the global achievements of his powerful movie, Ireke: Rise of the Maroons.
The movie, which recounts the tale of an African slave uprising in the Caribbean, had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, along with showings in London (United Kingdom), Lagos, and Abeokuta on the same day.
NIDCOM, through a statement from its Spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, stated that this achievement highlights the increasing impact of Nigerian creativity on the world stage.
Dabiri-Erewa noted that the film’s achievement was especially significant in bringing overlooked African and Nigerian historical stories into the global spotlight.
“It’s thrilling to witness a Nigerian in the Diaspora sharing our narrative with the world, resonating with various audiences, from the Caribbean to British communities and further. It’s enlightening that Macjob’s artistic path started in Abeokuta and has since grown into an international presence, enhancing Nigeria’s reputation and creating chances for others through education and guidance. His accomplishments demonstrate what Nigerians can achieve when local talent intersects with global prospects,” she mentioned.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that NIDCOM will remain committed to assisting Nigerians living abroad in attaining their objectives, and working alongside them to create favorable international perceptions of Nigeria.
