They are the reliable pair of glasses that assist you in reading recipes, composing letters, or diving into the newest…crime novel.

However, reading glasses might soon become obsolete.

Researchers have found that using eye drops multiple times daily can enhance close-up vision, with benefits lasting for several years.

And the formula may ‘substantially decrease reliance’ on reading glasses, researchers stated.

Experts who focus on presbyopia—a typical condition that causes difficulty in focusing on nearby objects and text as people get older—sought to discover if there were other alternatives available apart from glasses or surgical procedures.

They conducted a retrospective analysis of 766 patients and discovered that most were able to read two, three, or more additional lines on a vision test known as a Jaeger chart following the use of specially developed eye drops.

The drops include pilocarpine, a medication that narrows the pupils and tightens the ciliary muscle, which is responsible for the eye’s capacity to focus on objects at different distances.

They also include diclofenac, a medication that helps decrease inflammation and the discomfort typically associated with pilocarpine.

Patients received the eye drops twice daily, typically in the morning and once more about six hours later.

A third dose may be administered optionally if symptoms returned or further visual relief was required.

The scientists evaluated the enhancement in patients’ ability to read the eye chart without using reading glasses one hour following the initial application of the drops.

Dr. Giovanna Benozza, head of the Center for Advanced Research on Presbyopia in Argentina, stated: ‘We carried out this study because of the substantial medical needs still unaddressed in managing presbyopia.’

Existing options like reading glasses or surgical procedures come with drawbacks, such as being cumbersome, causing social anxiety, and carrying possible dangers or side effects.

Our most important finding demonstrated quick and lasting enhancements in near vision. One hour following the initial drops, patients experienced an average improvement of 3.45 Jaeger lines.

The therapy also enhanced concentration at every distance.

A enhancement in the patients’ eyesight remained stable for as long as two years—the duration of the research.

Dr. Benozza mentioned that the eye drops might greatly decrease reliance on reading glasses.

“Crucially, this treatment is not meant to substitute surgical procedures, but instead to offer a useful option for patients looking for safe, effective, and tailored alternatives, as well as the convenience of not relying on glasses,” she stated.

Ophthalmic experts now have a scientifically supported drug treatment that broadens the range of presbyopia management beyond eyeglasses and operations.

The results were shared at the43rd Meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
