Dhaka, September 15 — Researchers have created eye drops that might be able to improve near vision for individuals suffering from presbyopia, a typical type of farsightedness, offering the possibility that reading glasses could become obsolete.
A research finding shared at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) meeting in Copenhagen showed that individuals who used the drops could read more lines on eye examination charts, with the benefits lasting as long as two years.
Presbyopia, commonly experienced by individuals in their 40s and beyond, happens when the eye’s lens becomes less flexible, causing trouble focusing on nearby items. While glasses or surgery can help manage the issue, glasses can be bothersome and surgery tends to be expensive. Scientists believe the new eye drops may provide a more straightforward and cost-effective solution.
A research project with 766 individuals evaluated eye drops that included pilocarpine and diclofenac, administered twice a day. Participants were split into three groups, all given the same amount of diclofenac but varying levels of pilocarpine.
The results indicated an average enhancement of 3.45 lines on the Jaeger chart, which assesses near visual acuity, within one hour of using the product. “Our most notable finding demonstrated quick and lasting improvements in near vision across all three concentrations,” stated Dr. Giovanna Benozzi, head of the Centre for Advanced Research for Presbyopia in Buenos Aires.
Significantly, 99 percent of patients in the 1% pilocarpine group attained ideal near vision, whereas 69 percent in the 2% group and 84 percent in the 3% group were able to read three or more extra lines.
Common adverse effects were temporary blurred vision, discomfort, and migraines, although scientists stated the drops were safe, efficient, and easily tolerated.
Experts received the results positively, yet emphasized the importance of conducting larger, long-term, multi-center studies to verify safety and efficacy prior to widespread implementation of the treatment.
