“Crying Ladies,” a heartwarming film from the Philippines, will be shown as part of the Contemporary World Film Series at TK Park’s Auditorium, located on the 8th floor of CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Road, on September 27 at 3:30 pm.
Directed by Mark Meily, this is a humorous and heartfelt, difficult yet significant, seemingly sad but secretly entertaining film that follows three professional mourners, each dealing with their own personal challenge.
Filipino women are employed by Wilson, a member of a wealthy family in Manila’s Chinatown, to mourn the passing of his father and maintain the Chinese funeral practice of hiring people to grieve.
Stella is a single mother facing financial difficulties, unable to properly care for her beloved son; Aling is an ex-B-movie actress still holding onto the memories of her former fame; and Choleng is a devout woman suffering from guilt due to her relationship with a married man.
Amidst the dramatic crying and formal mourning, the women express their personal sorrows, challenges, aspirations, and ambitions. The movie blends humor with profoundly touching, reflective scenes, highlighting essential Filipino values like family love, the significance of community, and the bayanihan spirit.
Although they face difficulties, the group shows a powerful sense of perseverance and a wish to conquer obstacles, embodying the Filipino trait of finding humor in tough situations and general toughness.
This humorous drama movie won the affection of critics and viewers at film festivals around the globe. It received multiple honors at the Metro Manila Film Festival and was chosen as the Philippines’ representative for the Academy Awards.
The movie event is backed by the Philippine embassy, with Ambassador Millicent Cruz Paredes set to present the film. Local snacks will be provided following the showing.
The film includes English subtitles.
