Hollywood legend Robert Redfordpassed away today at the age of 89.

His curly golden hair and youthful smile made him one of the most sought-after male stars globally – frequently appearing on lists of the ‘sexiest men of all time’.

But what specifically made the heartthrob so appealing?

As stated by Dr. Julian De Silva, a facial plastic surgeon located inLondon, it ultimately relates to the Greek Golden Ratio of Beauty.

“He mentioned in a blog post that the ancient Greeks employed a mathematical proportion to assess beauty and balance,” he explained.

The golden ratio was applied in Greek architecture, renowned Renaissance artworks, and forms the foundation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, which represents his concept of the ideal male physique.

So, how does Redford compare to this old method of measurement?

The Daily Mail employed an online application to examine Redford’s facial features – and discovered a remarkable score of 82.31 percent.

The concept of the Golden Ratio was developed by the Greeks to quantify beauty.

It can be applied to nearly any subject and was notably utilized by Leonardo Da Vinci in his renowned artwork, the Vitruvian Man, to depict the ideal human male form.

The concept of the Golden Ratio suggests that the more closely the proportions of a face or body align with the number 1.618 (Phi), the more aesthetically pleasing they appear.

To uncover the key to his attractive appearance, the Daily Mail shared a frontal image of a young Redford with GoldenRatioAI.

The site’s analysis showed that the actor’s Face Height Ratio was 1.068 (65.99 percent), whereas his Philtrum to Nose Ratio was 1.377 (85.12 percent).

In the end, his Eye to Mouth Ratio measured an impressive 1.686 (95.81 percent), resulting in an overall score of 82.31 percent.

Although this is undoubtedly a remarkable score, it is less impressive when compared to those of other top actors, as stated by Dr. De Silva.

His earlier assessment showed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the ranking, achieving a remarkable score of 93.04 percent.

What is the Mathematical Proportion of Beauty?

The Golden Ratio – approximately 1:1.618 – is a mathematical concept that defines perfect proportions.

In the context of facial beauty, it provides a framework for attaining facial harmony and balance.

Facial features that are well-proportioned, based on this ratio, are typically considered more attractive.

Dr. De Silva stated, “Aaron emerged as the obvious victor when every aspect of his facial features was assessed for ideal physical beauty.”

His 93.04% rating would likely secure him the title of the most attractive James Bond in history if he is cast as anticipated.

He leads all the James Bond actors – Sean Connery comes in second with 89.2%, followed by Roger Moore in third with 88.8%, while Daniel Craig is last, behind George Lazenby, who has 84.2%.

Actress Lucien Laviscount, 32, finished in second position with a rating of 92.41 percent, while actor Paul Mescal, 28, ranked third as the most attractive man on the list, scoring 92.38 percent.

In addition to his attractive appearance, Redford was recognized for his shiny and full head of hair, which he maintained into his later years.

This could have enhanced his popularity, as indicated by a 2021 study conducted by scholars from Bucknell University.

In the research, the group presented participants with images of men both with and without hair, and requested them to evaluate the individuals based on attractiveness, fitness, warmth, elegance, and kindness.

The findings indicated that men with hair were perceived as more appealing, healthier, and with more favorable characteristics compared to those without hair.

Although the exact connection is not yet understood, the scientists propose that hair could serve as a reliable sign of men’s overall health.

Writing in their research, published inEvolutionary Psychological Science, the researchers, headed by T. Joel Wade, wrote: ‘Why does head hair influence the way men are perceived?’

Maybe it’s due to the biological importance of head hair for men.

If [male pattern baldness] leads to significant distress and is associated with a strong stigma, one evolutionary theory suggests that [baldness] may signal suboptimal health, stress reactions, or other factors that could reduce attractiveness as a mate.
