The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has implemented a new vehicle registration and license plate system throughout the province, following the federal model, according to an announcement made by the Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department on Wednesday.

The system, starting right away, will be completely implemented by November 30, 2025. According to the new regulations, registration numbers and license plates will be associated with the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) rather than the vehicle’s chassis number.

Authorities stated that the program aims to prevent the abuse of vehicles in illegal actions while making the process of registering and transferring ownership easier for owners.

Car buyers need to transfer the ownership into their name within three months, while sellers must make sure the transfer is properly completed for the new owner. Not following this could lead to fines or issues in future dealings.

New regulations for license plates and smart cards

When a vehicle is sold, the CNIC-linked registration copy or smart card will be turned off but will stay with the previous owner until it is reassigned.

Vehicle owners have the option to move their license plate and registration number to a different car.

Inactive numbers can remain valid for as long as three years, provided that biometric checks are conducted annually.

If numbers are not reissued within three years, they will be invalidated, and corresponding documents and license plates must be submitted back to the registration authority.

The department called on residents to comply with the updated rules in order to prevent legal complications and help enhance safety and control over vehicle ownership within the region.
