The UK’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6, has introduced a new dark web communication platform to enable the sharing of data from possible international sources and to recruit agents across the globe, including in Russia.

“As the world evolves and the challenges we encounter increase, it is essential that the UK remains always a step ahead of its opponents,” UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated to local media before the unveiling of the Silent Courier platform.

“Our top-tier intelligence agencies are directly involved in this issue, operating behind the scenes to ensure the safety of British citizens,” she added.

Now we are enhancing their work with advanced technology, enabling MI6 to recruit new agents for the UK – in Russia and globally.

On Friday, MI6 shared a set of videos to advertise the service and outline its functionality.

In a particular video, a voiceover states, “For more than a century, the foundation of MI6’s operations has been in-person interactions.”

Now we can establish those connections with greater security online, through our enhanced dark web platform, Silent Courier.

“If you possess information about global instability or hostile intelligence operations, you can now reach out to MI6 and disclose it safely through Silent Courier,” the narrator states.

In a different video, MI6 advised individuals wanting to reach out to the agency to utilize a “clean” device, discouraging possible informants from using their personal phone or computer, as well as any devices owned by relatives or friends.

In addition to the standard protocol, Britain’s intelligence agency recommends that informants operating in “high-risk countries” utilize a VPN, alongside the suggested use of Tor — an open-source web browser designed for private and anonymous online activity.

The outgoing head of MI6, Richard Moore, who has led the intelligence agency for almost five years, announced the initiation of Silent Courier during a speech in Istanbul on Friday, “to those men and women in Russia who have truths to tell and the bravery to speak them, I extend an invitation to reach out to MI6.”

Moore will be replaced by Blaise Metreweli in October, making her the first woman to head the service.

The effort to hire foreign agents resembles a 2023 initiative by the US’ CIA, where Washington sought out possible Russian informants through a set of social media videos.
