Addis Ababa, September 19, 2025 (ENA) — The Ministry of Health has highlighted that the pioneering National Integrated Rehabilitation Center will represent a significant step forward in merging Ethiopia’s healthcare system.

Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba has initiated the building ofThe National Integrated Rehabilitation Centreat Gefersa, Sheger City, during a ceremony that drew senior government officials and medical professionals.

In her address at the event, the minister highlighted that the new rehabilitation center will serve as a model for the nation’s healthcare system.

Ethiopia’s existing rehabilitation facility has been performing procedures on patients for over four decades, and the new project seeks to develop it into a premier center of excellence across Africa, becoming the top rehabilitation institution for individuals with health challenges.

Dr. Mekdes reiterated the government’s focus on health policy, especially concerning non-communicable diseases, which have remained a key concern for the last thirty years.

The facility, as declared by the minister, will bring together 17 separate locations into a single unified organization, providing combined support for physical disabilities and mental health conditions.

As stated by the minister, patients experiencing cognitive, mental, and physical disabilities will also have access to thorough rehabilitation initiatives.

The facility, covering over 17 hectares, will include 13 sections offering medical, therapeutic, residential, and recreational services, as stated by the minister, who also mentioned that it will feature urban agriculture initiatives to enhance patient care, facilitate treatment, and provide job opportunities for professionals in various disciplines.

After finishing, the National Integrated Rehabilitation Center will be the largest in East Africa, providing specialized treatment for accident-related injuries, long-term health issues, and natural illnesses.

The whole initiative is supported by the Ethiopian government, the minister stated, reflecting the nation’s commitment to expanding rehabilitation facilities and encouraging medical tourism.

The center will serve as a guiding institution, enhancing the quality of life for disadvantaged communities in Ethiopia and across the entire continent, she mentioned.
