The Ogun State Government has advised senior citizens in the community to stop taking medications on their own and avoid the habit of using multiple drugs.
The head of Service in Ogun State, Kehinde Onasanya, issued the warning in Abeokuta during the 2025 World Physiotherapy Day event hosted by the Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation department of the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board.
Discussing the topic: ‘Healthy Aging and Prevention of Falls in the Elderly,’ Onasanya, represented by the host Permanent Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Olayinka Elemide, emphasized that physiotherapy and physical exercises play a vital role in the general well-being and healthy aging of older adults.
The top civil servant in the state stated that senior citizens should do everything possible to avoid activities that could cause them stress or lead to depression. In his statement, the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Abdul Suraj, commended the organizers for gathering the elderly to exchange information and connect with them, noting that the event is crucial as it will help the elderly avoid a painful old age.
The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Prof. Saka Matemilola, who joined other rulers to attend the event praised the organizers for considering the elderly and ensuring they are not neglected in their later years. He also urged the elderly to regularly seek advice from healthcare professionals and to refrain from self-medication.
Earlier, in her welcome speech, Mrs. Moji Eogun, the Director of Physiotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation at the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board, stated that the event was important to prevent frequent falls among the elderly, promote a nutritious diet, and caution against the use of multiple medications for healthy aging.
