A consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Prof Adebayo Adeniyi, has stated that untreated infections may hinder a woman’s ability to become pregnant.

Adeniyi, the Medical Director at Olives Fertility Centre in Ado Ekiti, highlighted infections as the primary reason for tubal blockage, which can hinder a woman’s ability to conceive.

A medical specialist, who mentioned that untreated pelvic infections can lead to serious effects, such as infertility, recommended visiting hospitals instead of relying on self-treatment.

He addressed an audience in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, discussing the recent case of a 60-year-old woman who became pregnant at the center using In-Vitro Fertilisation.

Adeniyi stated, “IVF is considered the final option when a woman has attempted multiple times without success in becoming pregnant. A woman is deemed unable to conceive independently if she has tried for two years with her partner and they have regular sexual relations. In some cases, we can detect the issue and address it. However, in other instances, no matter the efforts, they remain unable to.”

Regarding the reasons some women experience delays in becoming pregnant and ways to prevent it, the medical expert stated, “The most frequent cause is the blockage of the fallopian tubes, which is typically the result of past infections that were not properly treated. These infections are often called toilet disease but are actually pelvic infections usually acquired through unprotected sex.”

Such infections can impact and obstruct the tubes, which are extremely narrow. If a woman experiences such an infection, which is quite prevalent, the initial sign might be unusual vaginal discharge.

The prevention typically discussed for individuals who can do it prior to marriage is sexual abstinence. However, we do not emphasize abstinence excessively because we recognize that this might be somewhat hypocritical, as some people may find it difficult to maintain abstinence. Therefore, we promote the use of condoms.

Adeniyi further explained condoms as “two-edged swords,” offering protection against infections as well as unintended pregnancies.

“However, nearly 80 percent of unmarried young people do not use a condom during sexual activity in our current society. When women develop an infection, rather than visiting the hospital for proper examination and treatment, they often purchase medications that may not effectively address the issue or only provide partial relief. Individuals with infections should seek appropriate medical care at hospitals,” he added.

A medical specialist stated that the center has delivered 123 children, including 20 twin groups and eight triplet groups, via IVF from October 2019 up to the present.
