BROADCAST JOURNALIST, Nana Aba Anamoah, is urging film officials to create methods for making movies in Ghana that highlight native narratives, proposing that this method might allow Ghanaian films to rival global offerings such as those from Hollywood.

As per Nana Aba Anamoah, numerous films created in Ghana have centered around love and romantic themes, frequently neglecting deep cultural stories such as those of the Asante community.

“We are not sharing our stories, and I don’t know how, but how can we compete with Hollywood, Bollywood when we are telling the same stories that they are telling?” she asked.

Nana Aba added, “you can’t instruct someone on how to be romantic. However, the Asante tale, the Ga tale, the Fante tale, the Ewe tale; they are genuine narratives.”

She was surprised that narratives such as Yaa Asantewaa, Tetteh Quarshie, and others have not been adapted into films. In response to the issue of insufficient funding for producing these stories, Nana Aba Anamoah mentioned, “if the story is engaging and thrilling, you don’t have to search for the funds, Netflix would produce it and label it as a Netflix Original.”

They will embrace it. We will remain here and realize that someone from America has created the Yaa Asantewaa film or the Komfo Anokye or Tetteh Quarshie movie, and we will have people to critique it.

Nana Aba’s remarks follow the recently conducted Asantehemaa’s funeral, which has been widely praised for highlighting the deep cultural traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Tens of thousands of attendees from Ghana and other countries gathered at the Manhyia Palace to honor the late Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, making the city a central hub for Ghana’s cultural traditions.
