Jeon Yoo-sung, 76, known as the “godfather of comedy,” is currently admitted to a general hospital in Jeonju because of deteriorating pneumothorax symptoms.

A representative from Jeon’s side stated on the 25th, “Air has accumulated in both lungs because of pneumothorax, which makes it hard for him to breathe on his own, so an oxygen mask has been used.” They further mentioned, “Although his breathing is as exhausting as if he had just run 100 meters, he is aware of visitors and exchanges stories with them.”

A pneumothorax occurs when air sacs in the lungs rupture, allowing air to escape into the pleural space and leading to partial lung collapse. Healthcare professionals issued a cautious diagnosis, noting that the outlook might either get better or worsen.

With news of his worsening health circulating, comedian juniors went to visit Jeon to share words of support. The Korea Broadcasting Comedian Association stated, “Jeon Yoo-sung, a respected senior in our comedy field, is currently in a severe condition. We want to convey our appreciation and admiration for Senior Jeon, who has dedicated himself to the growth of Korean comedy while caring for and loving his juniors throughout the years. We would be grateful if seniors and juniors who are unable to visit the hospital due to hectic schedules or other reasons could send video messages.”

It was stated that Association President Kim Hak-rae went to the hospital the day before and shared video messages from Jeon, expressing hopes for his quick recovery from his juniors.

Stories about Jeon’s declining health started spreading last year. In November of the previous year, Jeon appeared on the YouTube channel of junior Kim Dae-hee and stated, “I was admitted to the hospital this year with three conditions: acute pneumonia, arrhythmia, and COVID-19. I lost one kilogram of weight each day, and my muscles vanished. I had a total weight loss of 16 kilograms.”

In June, he received treatment for a pneumothorax, but his condition deteriorated, resulting in readmission to the hospital. He was also unable to participate in the Busan International Comedy Festival event on the 6th of last month, which he had intended to attend.

Jeon started his career in 1969 as a writer for TBC. He then moved on to become a comedian and became well-known through shows such as *Humor No. 1* and *Show Video Jockey*. He is also recognized as the first individual to introduce the term “gagman” at a time when entertainers were commonly called “comedians” or “humorists.”
