Celebrated British pop star Dua Lipahas reportedly separated from her William Morris Endeavour (WME) agent David Levy, following reports that he was part of an effort to eliminate theIrish rap trio Kneecapfrom the Glastonbury lineup regarding their pro-Palestine views.
As reported by The Mail on Sunday, Dua Lipa “ensured through her team that David Levy was no longer involved in her music. She is very publicly supportive of Palestine, and this stance does not match with David’s views.”
The source stated: “She sees him as backing Israel’s conflict in Gaza, along with the harsh treatment of Palestinians, which was clearly shown through the letter he signed and sent to Emily and Michael Eavis.”
The document in question is a private email signed by Levy, sent to the Glastonbury festival organizers, and shared with over 30 individuals; any one of them could have been involved in the disclosure.
UPDATE: Dua Lipa has refuted The Mail’s allegations and commented on Instagram: “I do not support the behavior of David Levy or other music executives towards an artist expressing their honesty.” Furthermore, in a statement provided to Euronews Culture, Glastonbury organizers have “firmly denied that the letter was disclosed by any individual associated with the Glastonbury Festival.”
The attempt to have Kneecap removed failed, and the rappers took the stage at Glastonbury as planned.
British police received issues regarding the group’s performance but, following an investigation, dropped the case, citing the absence of proof regarding any criminal act.
Dua Lipa has always been aadvocate for the Palestinian movement, criticizing the violence in Gaza and participating in demonstrations with other artists.
She had previously been part of the group that included Jessica Chastain, Michael Stipe, and Cate Blanchett insending an open letter to the former US President Joe Biden, urging for a ceasefire and “an end to the bombing of Gaza and the safe return of hostages”. She has also condemned the “Israeli genocide” and in May of this year, was among hundreds of artists whourge British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to halt the UK’s arms exports to Israel.
An open letter addressed to the Prime Minister, initiated by a refugee charityChoose Love, stated: “The world is observing and history will not overlook. The children of Gaza cannot wait for another moment. Prime Minister, what decision will you make? Participation in war crimes, or the bravery to take action?”
Dua Lipa is still affiliated with the talent agency WME and hasn’t released any public comments regarding the separation from her agent. Nevertheless, Kneecap shared a screenshot of the initial Mail on Sunday article on their Instagram Stories.
British trip-hop outfit Massive Attackhas also ceased collaborating with Levy due to his position on Gaza.
Last week, we mentioned that Massive Attack was the most recent musical act toremove their collection from Spotifyin protest of founder Daniel Ek’s investment of €600m in Helsing. The group also requested their label, UMG, to take their music off not just fromSpotifybut all streaming services in Israel.
