Nigeria has been re-elected to Part 2 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council, a specialized global organization responsible for ensuring safe, secure, and environmentally friendly air travel.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) states that Mr. Ben Tukur has been re-elected to the Council in Montreal, Canada, during the current 42nd Assembly of ICAO.

A comment regarding Tukur’s re-election was released to journalists on Saturday in Abuja by Mr. Tunde Moshood.

Moshood serves as the Special Adviser (SA) for Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyano.

As per the declaration, Tukur won following a closely fought election that included 11 other African countries.

Tukur, who has served as Nigeria’s representative to ICAO, will remain in the position of representing Nigeria on the Council.

This will enhance the country’s position in international aviation regulation.

He secured re-election with a notable 163 votes from 185 member states eligible to vote, highlighting widespread global trust in Nigeria’s leadership and its role in the aviation industry, according to Moshood.

The SA mentioned that Nigeria will be among 11 other nations re-elected to Part 2 of the ICAO Council, including Egypt and South Africa from the African group.

He emphasized that the election result demonstrated the endurance of Nigeria’s aviation diplomacy and the power of its international partnerships within the ICAO community.

Following the announcement of the results, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, referred to the success as a “source of pride for Nigeria and for Africa.”

He mentioned that the re-election highlighted the nation’s dedication to the development of global civil aviation and the advancement of safety, security, and environmental responsibility within the industry.

Nigeria’s ongoing membership in the ICAO Council means the country will stay deeply engaged in influencing policies and regulations that direct international air travel.

“Ongoing participation of Nigeria in the ICAO Council will also support the interests of Africa within the global aviation sector,” he added.

The ICAO Council serves as the leadership entity of the worldwide organization, made up of 36 Member States selected by the ICAO Assembly for a three-year period.

The Council is split into three sections for the purpose of elections, not for day-to-day operations. These sections represent various types of countries to guarantee geographical and functional representation.

The first category of the ICAO Council election includes nations that are key participants in international civil aviation, such as the United States, China, France, and Germany.

The Category 2 group, into which Nigeria was re-elected, consists of nations that provide the most significant support for facilities used in international civil air navigation.

The Category 3 section is intended for geographical representation, ensuring that every part of the world is fairly depicted.
