Matopo High School recently held its much-looked-forward-to Speech and Prize-Giving Day, showcasing the institution’s commitment to academic success, the integration of cutting-edge technology, and remarkable accomplishments from both students and faculty.

The principal of the school, Mr Gardson Sibanda, highlighted Matopo High School’s distinct role in the area, noting its outstanding amenities, such as three specialized laboratories for Commercial Studies, Geography, and Computer Science, which are uncommon in nearby schools.

“Our institution aims for a 100 percent success rate in O-level and A-level examinations,” stated Mr Sibanda, highlighting the outstanding 2024 outcomes.

The O-level pass rate increased to 92.5 percent in 2024, compared to 89.8 percent in 2023, while the A-level pass rate reached a perfect 100 percent, an improvement from 97.5 percent in 2023. Significantly, 193 students passed five or more O-levels, and 44 students obtained five As or higher.

Mr. Sibanda stated that Matopo High School is adopting digital change by transitioning to a paper-free system to improve education and cut expenses.

Important projects involve ordering a Smart Lab with 40 tablets to encourage active learning, supplying laptops to each Head of Department for easy access to materials, and collaborating with an Edutech firm that promised US$20,000 for the creation of an Innovation Hub on campus.

Mr. Sibanda enthusiastically highlighted remarkable academic accomplishments of students.

Hazel Ncube received a scholarship in 2023 to attend USAP School in Marondera for her A-level studies, while Nigel Chirambaguwa is currently enrolled in Lower 6 classes in Eswatini through the Star Leadership programme in 2024.

“Several students have also obtained international scholarships, including those in the United States, with particular initiatives undertaken to help orphans access this funding,” stated Mr Sibanda.

The institution also emphasizes the significance of environmental sustainability and involvement in activities outside the classroom. The principal pointed out solar energy initiatives that decrease dependence on generators, outstanding achievements in sports and music at regional and national events, and a vibrant Environmental Club organizing efforts to maintain community cleanliness.

Enrolling 1,000 students — 80 percent of whom are boarders and 20 percent day students — Matopo High School serves as a symbol of academic excellence and progressive thinking within Zimbabwe’s education system.
