The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be shared by Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimun Sakaguchi for “their findings related to peripheral immune tolerance,”the Nobel Committee of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced on Monday.

“Their findings have established the groundwork for a new area of study and accelerated the creation of innovative therapies, such as those for cancer and autoimmune conditions,” the Assembly stated in a release.

The winners will receive a reward of 11 million Swedish kronor(€1 million, $1.2 million), along with a gold trophy from the King of Sweden.

What is the history of the award?

The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been given out 115 times to a total of 229 recipients from 1901 up to 2024.

The award from last year was jointly given to Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun.for their identification of microRNA, which acts as switches within cells that regulate cellular activities and the timing of those actions.

The award for physics will be revealed on Tuesday, followed by the chemistry prize on Wednesday, and the literature honor on Thursday.

Friday will feature the release of the Nobel Peace Prize, whereas the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics is scheduled to be revealed on October 13.

The ceremony honoring the awards is scheduled for December 10, which marks the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s passing.Nobel was a prosperous Swedish entrepreneur.and the creator of dynamite who passed away in 1896.
