Sri Lanka, October 6 — Wesley College from Colombo won the Elite Schools Under-16 Ten-a-Side Rugby Championship in an exciting manner, defeating Science College, Mount Lavinia by 5 points (one try) to 3 (one penalty) in the Cup Championship final held at the St Peter’s College grounds in Bambalapitiya yesterday.
Following a goalless first half, the game came alive in the second period. Science College took the lead in the eighth minute as Nesandu Pahan converted a penalty, scoring to make the score 3-0.
Wesley, nevertheless, responded vigorously when their right winger Shibly dived for an unconverted try in the 11th minute, giving his team a 5-3 lead.
Although Science made a late effort to change the outcome, Wesley’s defense remained strong until the end, resulting in a narrow two-point win and the esteemed Cup trophy.
In the semi-finals of the Cup, Science defeated Trinity with a score of 12-7, while Wesley dominated Lumbini with a result of 17-0, securing their spot in the final.
Joes bag Plate title
In the Plate Championship, St Joseph’s College secured their win by beating Isipathana College 12-5, having led 7-5 at halftime. Isipathana opened the scoring with a try from hooker Rukshan Kandage in the third minute, which remained unconverted. St Joseph’s responded with a try from Nathan de Silva, converted by Nisith de Silva, giving them a 7-5 advantage at the break. Dewmith added another try early in the second half, increasing the lead to 12-5, which the Joes held until the final whistle. In the Plate semi-finals, Prince of Wales’ College fell to Isipathana with a score of 19-0, while St Joseph’s narrowly beat Royal 7-5.
Vidyartha beat Kingswood
Vidyartha College in Kandy delivered a strong performance to claim the Bowl Championship, defeating their local rivals Kingswood College with a score of 14-0, maintaining the same lead at halftime. Ayesh Chandraratne played a key role for Vidyartha, scoring both tries in quick succession to secure the win. In the semi-finals, Vidyartha overcame St Anthony’s with a 19-0 victory, while Kingswood triumphed over St Peter’s with a 7-5 score.
DS Senanayake claims the Shield title
In the Shield Championship, DS Senanayake College from Colombo secured a 10-0 victory against Ananda College. DSSC established an early 5-0 advantage with a try and increased their lead when Theshika Abeysekera scored another try in the fourth minute. They kept their 10-0 lead until the end of the match. In the semi-finals, DS Senanayake defeated Mahanama 7-0, while Ananda managed to beat Zahira 12-7.
