The 2025/2026 academic year has officially commenced at Kigali Independent University (ULK) and ULK Polytechnic Institute (UPI), showcasing their ongoing dedication to teamwork and providing high-quality education. This year is significant, as ULK has introduced seven new master’s degree programs, while UPI has begun offering Bachelor of Technology (A0) courses in various fields. The launch event took place on Monday, October 6, at ULK’s Kigali campus, attended by the President and Founder of both institutions, Prof. Dr. Rwigamba Balinda; the Chancellor of both universities, Prof. Jean Marie Vianney Kayishema; the ULK Vice Chancellor, Dr. Cyprien Sikubwabo; the UPI Principal, Eng. Jean Pierre Musabyimana; and the UPI Vice Principal for Academic Affairs, Daniel Balinda, along with other officials. In his speech, Prof. Rwigamba emphasized the core values and ethics that underpin ULK and UPI’s mission to provide education based on integrity, excellence, and innovation. He stated that the institutions aim to produce graduates who are not only academically skilled but also serve as role models and catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond. “We consistently work hard to ensure students receive education that meets contemporary standards,” he said. “This includes hiring qualified and capable lecturers from Rwanda and across Africa, such as Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria.” He also highlighted the institutions’ advanced facilities, including modern libraries, cutting-edge computer labs, and sports infrastructure, which together create an optimal learning environment. Prof. Rwigamba noted that ULK and UPI continue to enhance partnerships with local and international institutions to foster academic excellence and innovation. As part of their academic growth, UPI has introduced new programs in applied sciences, now offering Bachelor of Technology (A0/BTech) degrees in multiple departments. Meanwhile, ULK has launched seven new master’s degree programs, with student registration already in progress. The new master’s programs at ULK include: MBA in Finance MBA in Accounting MBA in Marketing MBA in Project Management MBA in Human Resource Management MBA in Procurement and Supply Chain Management Master of Software Engineering At UPI, the newly introduced Bachelor of Technology (A0) programs include: Civil Engineering (Departments of Construction and Technology, and Land Surveying) Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Departments of Electrical Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication Technology) “We have also made sure that students have access to comfortable housing, reliable internet, water, and electricity. All of this is intended to create an environment where they can study effectively and enjoy their educational experience, receiving education that meets global standards,” Prof. Rwigamba added. He concluded by expressing deep gratitude to President Paul Kagame for his outstanding leadership, vision, and development plans that continue to benefit not only Rwanda but the entire African continent. He also thanked the Ministry of Education for its collaboration, the security forces for maintaining peace and stability, and the university management and students for their trust and commitment. ULK Vice Chancellor Dr. Sikubwabo thanked the Ministry of Education and the Higher Education Council (HEC) for their ongoing support and collaboration, reaffirming ULK’s commitment to promoting quality higher education in Rwanda. UPI Principal Eng. Musabyimana praised students and faculty for their cooperation and dedication, encouraging them to stay focused and ensure that the knowledge gained translates into practical skills and professional excellence. He assured them of full administrative support in achieving academic success.
