Mount Kigali University will officially welcome Prof Egara Kabaji as its first Chancellor on October 10, 2025. This appointment represents a major achievement in the university’s ongoing efforts to achieve academic excellence and gain international recognition. “As a community, we are thrilled to welcome our first chancellor,” states Vice-Chancellor Dr Martin Kimemia, who adds that this is a new era for the expanding university. Dr Kimemia highlights that Prof Kabaji’s appointment has provided the university with renewed motivation to reach greater levels of success. “Prof Kabaji is a highly regarded scholar, and under his leadership, the university is sure to rise nationally and globally,” he explains. As Chancellor, Prof Kabaji will serve as a key representative and advocate for the university, both within the country and internationally. He is expected to establish partnerships that enhance the university’s visibility and support, enabling it to effectively carry out its mission of teaching, learning, scholarship, and service to the nation and the world. Prof Kabaji is well-known for his contributions to literature, cultural studies, and academic leadership, bringing a wealth of experience and vision to Mount Kigali University. His distinguished career demonstrates a strong commitment to education, creativity, and leadership across Africa’s higher education sector. In his role as Chancellor, Prof Kabaji will also act as a patron of creative writing, encouraging collaboration with other institutions and organizations to promote literary excellence and innovation. Mount Kigali University is dedicated to making Rwandan students recognized globally, a goal that Prof Kabaji reaffirmed during Mount Kenya University’s (MKU) 27th Graduation Ceremony on August 8. The event was also held at the Mount Kigali University campus in Kicukiro District. During the ceremony, the newly appointed Chancellor pledged to work closely with the University Governing Council and the Vice-Chancellor to advance this vision. “This will be achieved through strengthening regional engagement, fostering academic rigor, and building global partnerships,” he said. In his speech, Prof Kabaji reflected on Mount Kigali University’s remarkable transformation from being a campus of MKU in Kenya into a fully independent institution. He acknowledged the Higher Education Council (HEC) and the Ministry of Education for their structured guidance and consistent support throughout this journey. “Rwanda has shown its ability to host and maintain world-class higher education institutions,” Prof Kabaji stated. “Mount Kigali University is ready to fulfill its national purpose as a university shaped by Rwanda for Rwanda and respected worldwide.” Prof Kabaji holds a PhD in Folk Media and Communication from the University of South Africa (UNISA), an MBA in Strategic Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), a Master of Arts in Literary Studies from Kenyatta University, and a Bachelor of Education in Literature and English from the same institution. His extensive knowledge, administrative experience, and passion for scholarship make him ideally suited to lead Mount Kigali University into its next stage of growth and development.
