The 2026 Ghana Science & Tech Explorer Challenge Prize (GSTEP) has been formally introduced, with educational institutions in the Volta Region preparing to take part in the competition for the first time.

The challenge this year, which falls under the theme,Inquiry to Outcome: STEM Beyond Borders, has extended to the Volta Region, marking a significant move towards providing hands-on Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) education to more students throughout Ghana.

The online debut, conducted through Zoom and broadcast live on Facebook, gathered educators, pupils, and individuals involved in STEM fields.

The current Challenge expands upon the achievements of earlier versions conducted in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions, where more than 30,000 students, 2,000 educators, and 500 schools have gained practical STEM opportunities.

It is carried out by a group of four entities: DreamOval Foundation (the main organization responsible for implementation), Partnership Bureau (handling partnerships and sponsorships), Shulem Lake (managing resources and materials), and Practical Education Network (providing mentorship and coaching).

The GSTEP Challenge collaborates with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, and is supported by the Fondation Botnar.

The head of the DreamOval Foundation, Afua Oforiwaa Asiamah Adjei, stated that the extension into the Volta Region enables even more young creators to join this transformative experience.

“This growth moves us nearer to our goal of establishing GSTEP as an entirely national platform, where each child, regardless of their origin, can obtain the opportunities and abilities that STEM education offers,” she stated.

The creator of GSTEP, Constance Agyeman, shared her thoughts on the initiative’s development and its increasing influence across the country.

Only last year, more than 1,000 creative concepts were proposed by students who applied STEM to tackle community issues — ranging from clean energy and eco-friendly agriculture to advancements in smart urban development.

Head of Partnerships and Alliances at the Partnership Bureau, Francis Ahene-Affoh, observed that “In recent years, we have seen remarkable solutions and innovations from technology that enhance developments in agriculture, aquaculture, road traffic management, education, and climate resilience.”

He mentioned that these concepts demonstrate that, with the appropriate platform, young middle school students are able to turn their curiosity into tangible results.

Applications for the 2026 GSTEP Challenge are available to Junior High Schools located in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti, and Volta regions. Eligible schools can sign up throughwww.gstep.org.gh to apply.
