Liebherr, Newmont’s on-site contractor, has collaborated with the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) to grant scholarships to three science students from the host communities of the Ahafo Mines. Each student received GH¢15,000 to support their bursaries for the rest of their undergraduate studies.
The Liebherr/NADeF funding program, established 13 years back, has thus far assisted 18 university students from the Ahafo Mines local communities in the Ahafo Region.
The students who have benefited are Bezaleel Kwaku Mensah, enrolled in a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery program at the University of Health and Allied Sciences; Simon Awuni, studying for a Bachelor of Technology in Pharmacy Technicians at Sunyani Technical University; and Joseph Amofa, pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at KNUST in the Ashanti Region.
At a brief ceremony held in Ntotroso on Friday, the Chairman of the NADeF Board, Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, stated that the objective of the scholarship program was to assist “motivated, highly driven, and talented” undergraduate science students in surmounting the financial obstacles linked to their education.
He stressed that the initiative demonstrated the dedication of both Liebherr and NADeF to developing talent and encouraging outstanding achievement in the sciences in the Newmont Ahafo Mines region.
Professor Ofosu-Kusi also stated that the number of students who had received benefits from the scholarship program had risen from one to three as Liebherr’s support grew, and he expressed the hope that more students would be eligible in the future.
The Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) officer at Liebherr-Ghana, Samuel Abban, in a short statement, mentioned that his team felt responsible for helping and supporting the community where they work, noting that collaborating with NADeF in recent years had been advantageous in reaching their objectives.
He stated that the process of choosing eligible students was open and clear, with 18 students having received support through the scholarship program since it began. He encouraged those who received the scholarships not to abandon their community after completing their studies, but instead to come back and contribute to their people in order to validate the investment made in them.
The head of NADeF, Elizabeth Opoku-Darko, also urged the recipients to work diligently to demonstrate that they deserve the financial aid provided to them.
