The Kaduna State branch of the Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria (ACHPN) has voiced significant worry about the increasing number of unauthorized health technology colleges functioning throughout Kaduna State.
Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, the head of ACHPN’s Kaduna state branch, Comrade Aliyu Abdulrasheed Umar, stated that only 25 health technology schools or colleges are functioning legally out of more than 60 unauthorized institutions.
He cautioned that the activities of these mushroom institutions present a significant risk to public health and professional integrity in the community health field.
As of now, only 25 schools are officially recognized. More than 60 health technology schools or colleges are functioning without approval from the board, creating a significant health risk.
These institutions assert they are educating Community Health Practitioners without authorization from the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN).
“We have discovered multiple illegal institutions in different Local Government Areas, deceiving the public and generating unqualified individuals. This behavior encourages fake practices and weakens the standard of health care services in our communities,” he stated.
The organization has provided an extensive list of unaccredited schools to the Kaduna State Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, calling for prompt measures to: shut down the unauthorized institutions in cooperation with security forces and Local Government Councils.
The chairman further mentioned that they recommended the ministry to release a list of officially recognized and authorized health institutions within the state, and limit clinical training in public health facilities to students from approved organizations only.
Umar further urged parents and caregivers to check the accreditation of any school before enrolling their children, in order to prevent wasting time and money on unrecognized courses.
“ACHPN is dedicated to protecting the standards of the Community Health profession and will keep collaborating with the Ministry of Health and CHRN to make sure only skilled professionals provide care to the residents of Kaduna State,” he said.
The group also urged the media to assist in raising public awareness about the risks of attending unapproved educational institutions and the importance of maintaining professional health standards.
