The Rwanda Space Agency (RSA) initiated a countrywide outreach campaign on Monday aimed at high school students as part of the third edition of Space Week, which is taking place from October 6 to 10. ALSO READ: Why Rwanda’s space economy is a catalyst for innovation and growth As per RSA, the campaign aims to encourage young Rwandans to pursue education and careers in space-related sciences and technology, while highlighting opportunities in both national and global space sectors. “The 2025 edition in Rwanda will include various activities such as student outreach, public exhibitions, expert discussions, and interactive learning sessions, all intended to increase awareness about the significance of space science and its influence on everyday life,” states the agency. One of the projects demonstrated how satellite data can be used to forecast natural disasters like floods, enabling humanitarian organizations to provide timely warnings and assist with evacuations when threats arise. Javine Arahirwa, one of the students involved in the project, mentioned that she helped develop the application that allows organizations to access real-time satellite information regarding potential natural hazards throughout the country. “With the assistance of AI, the app provides preventive and pre-disaster solutions for communities at risk,” she added. The 2025 theme, “Living in Space,” emphasizes innovations and challenges related to sustaining human life beyond Earth. RSA stated that this outreach campaign is part of its larger strategy to cultivate the next generation of innovators who will play a role in Rwanda’s long-term vision of utilizing space technology for socio-economic development.
