The Deputy President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has cautioned that the government will not accept the mistreatment of students, particularly girls, by school officials and educators. She emphasized that students are placed under the care of teachers for their development, education, and character building to become valuable members of society, not to be subjected to abuse or harassment. “Educators and school leaders who breach the trust of students will face appropriate consequences,” she stated.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize 2025 held at the main campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Sokode, Volta Region, on Sunday, addressed the theme: “Raising the status of teachers for quality education.” He mentioned that a national digital learning initiative for educators had been introduced, having trained more than 60,000 teachers in teaching methods, digital skills, and inclusive strategies.

She emphasized that “transfers are never meant as penalties, and therefore should never be utilized to discipline individuals who violated our children’s trust and brought shame upon our profession,” and mentioned that the government has chosen to involve Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) to promote wider involvement in education.

The Deputy Leader stated that the government acknowledged educators who prioritized service over personal interests, made sacrifices rather than seeking comfort, and focused on nation-building instead of individual benefits. He emphasized that the government is implementing steps to reform education and position teachers as central figures in this transformation. Professor Opoku-Agyemang revealed that the government has instructed the Minister of Education to ensure that new school structures include housing for teachers. He mentioned that teacher certification exams will be conducted within their home institutions to simplify the process, and that promotions of teachers from Director Level Two to Level One, along with other advancements, will be carried out accordingly.

The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, stated that his department had started what he referred to as university-linked roads to be built throughout the nation, and UHAS would not be excluded, promising that financial support would be provided for the initiative. Mr Iddrisu mentioned that the government is committed to enhancing the living standards and working conditions of educators, adding that President John Dramani Mahama is looking into setting up a UHAS campus in Keta, named the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Engineering.

The Minister revealed that the Ministry of Education is partnering with the District Assembly Common Fund (ACF) to launch three-bedroom housing projects across various regions as part of the “teacher dabre” program. The top national teacher of 2025, Mr. RichArd W. Tiimob from Savelugu Senior High School, will have a three-bedroom house constructed at a location of his preference, while 11 award recipients received pickup trucks, sedan cars, motorcycles, cash, and laptop computers.
