The Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC) has issued award letters to 600 qualified applicants for its 2025/2026 Local Postgraduate Scholarship Program
Delivering the scholarship letters to the successful recipients at the award event in Port Harcourt, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, stated that the scholarship program was a project aimed at boosting human resource development in the Niger Delta area.
Ogbuku, backed by the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Ifedayo Abegunde; the Bayelsa State representative on the NDDC Board, Senator Dimaro Denyanbofa, and other commission directors, encouraged the recipients to serve as positive representatives of the Niger Delta region.
In a statement from the commission’s Corporate Affairs Director, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Ogbuku highlighted the scholarship initiative as a crucial part of the NDDC’s human resources development strategy.
He pointed out that education is the strongest tool for improving the prospects of the Niger Delta area.
He noted that earlier recipients of the scholarship program established impressive benchmarks for later groups.
He stated: “It is impressive that 32 of our academics earned honors upon graduating from Coventry University this year.”
Ogbuku urged the NDDC students to stay focused in their academic pursuits, emphasizing that they had a responsibility to succeed for the benefit of the Niger Delta.
He stated, “You are the ones carrying the flame of change. Your education is not only for your own benefit but also for the millions who rely on you for inspiration. As you continue with your postgraduate studies, keep in mind that each lecture you attend, each paper you compose, and each solution you offer is a move toward improving our communities.”
In his comments, Dr George Uzowanne, the Director of Education, Health and Social Services at NDDC, revealed that from a total of 46,240 candidates, only 600 were chosen via a transparent online testing system.
He stated: “I extend my congratulations to the successful applicants who underwent a smooth selection procedure.”
Uzonwanne stated that the candidate selection process was open, highlighting that the competition for the scholarship program was rigorous and equitable.
He stated, “With programs such as the NDDC Local Scholarship Initiative, we are focusing on nurturing the intellects that will determine the future of the Niger Delta. By providing our young people with higher education in areas including engineering, environmental studies, technology, humanities, and business administration, we enable them to address the specific issues facing our region.”
The Director of Education at the NDDC, Dr Angela Chukwudifu, noted that the new scholarship initiative focuses on local education to ensure that recipients stay linked with the issues and prospects of the Niger Delta, promoting a feeling of ownership and accountability.
She stated: “Through programs such as the NDDC Local Scholarship Initiative, we are supporting the individuals who will determine the future of the Niger Delta.”
By providing our young people with expert understanding in areas such as engineering, environmental studies, technology, the humanities, and business administration, we enable them to address the specific issues facing our region.
The top scholarship recipient, Mr. Reginald Omubo-Pepple, praised the commission for providing them with a chance to improve their education.
He promised that the recipients would strive to be effective representatives for the area and later help in the advancement of the Niger Delta.
