Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi has pledged to prioritize infrastructure growth and the identification of talent across the country during his tenure as the newly appointed President of the Nigeria Rowing, Canoe and Sailing Federation.
Ogunbiyi, who was chosen without opposition following a transparent vote where all 13 ballots were cast at the Media Centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, takes over from Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni (retired). The election, referred to by stakeholders as among the most free and fair in recent years, also resulted in Mr. Kayode Abulazeez being elected Vice President with 13 unanimous votes.
In his acceptance address, Dr. Ogunbiyi praised the previous leadership for establishing a solid base and guiding the Federation to global acknowledgment through regular involvement in international events, such as Olympic qualifiers. He highlighted that the upcoming stage of development will center on creating top-tier facilities and nurturing talent from every part of the country.
Nigeria has abundant water resources, and these natural advantages should be transformed into centers for athletic success,” Ogunbiyi stated. “We will invest in facilities that meet international standards and create initiatives that identify, develop, and support athletes from all parts of the nation.
The newly elected leader emphasized that the Federation’s outlook is in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, vowing to establish a long-lasting environment that integrates support from both the public and private sectors.
Recognizing the ongoing issue of a weak maintenance culture, Ogunbiyi pledged a two-pronged strategy—building new infrastructure while guaranteeing the effective upkeep and upgrading of current facilities. He stated his belief that through targeted investment and teamwork, Nigeria would experience a significant advancement in rowing, canoeing, and sailing over the next two years.
Deputy President Kayode Abulazeez shared Ogunbiyi’s perspective, emphasizing that strong infrastructure is crucial for discovering untapped abilities in various parts of Nigeria.
‘From the Lagos Lagoon to the River Niger and further, our waterways are a blessing. The aim is to make rowing, canoeing, and sailing genuine national sports that are available to everyone in Nigeria,’ he stated.
