Former players from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and PSG have been among those who have failed to score the most penalties.
The typical success rate for penalties is approximately 75%, and although most players on this list have converted numerous set pieces, they have also failed to score a significant number of them.
In today’s time, these are the seven athletes who have failed to score the most penalties.
Note: The data does not include missed kicks from penalty shootouts.
7. Ronaldinho – 16 missed opportunities
The Brazilian had an impressive 81.1% success rate from the penalty area, yet still made 16 unsuccessful attempts.
One of his most well-known missed penalties occurred during a match against England in 2013, when Joe Hart executed a remarkable two-save sequence to stop the Brazilian star.
6. Zlatan Ibrahimović – 17 missed opportunities
Ibrahimovic converted 87 penalties out of 104 attempts, resulting in a success rate of 83.6%.
Nevertheless, his goal-scoring frequency became less consistent after he rejoined AC Milan in 2020.
In his last four seasons, he managed a 50% success rate from the penalty spot, failing to score on six of the 12 penalties he attempted after returning to Milan.
5. Ciro Immobile – 19 shots missed
Having failed to score on two of his past seven penalty kicks for Besiktas, Immobile has recently surpassed Ibrahimovic on this list.
He has attempted 105 penalty kicks, scoring 86 and missing 19, resulting in an overall success rate of 81.9%.
4. Francesco Totti – 20 missed opportunities
Totti was particularly effective from the penalty kick in his later career.
Notably, he didn’t miss a single penalty throughout his last four and a half seasons, converting his final 13 straight kicks before retiring.
Over the course of his entire career, he accumulated 106 and achieved 86.
3. Neymar – 22 missed opportunities
Although the Brazilian is typically calm and composed from the penalty spot, he has had his share of missed kicks over the years.
He has attempted 113 penalties in total, scoring 91 of them, resulting in a conversion rate of 80.5%, which remains significantly higher than the average.
After returning to Santos earlier this year, he has maintained a perfect penalty record, scoring both of the penalties he has taken.
It’s notable that his penalty record at PSG was significantly above average, with him scoring 28 out of 31 penalties he attempted in France. This translates to a conversion rate of 90.3%.
2. Lionel Messi – 32 attempts missed
Last year, Messi was the player who had missed the most penalties in football history, but he has now been surpassed.
Although scoring penalties has never been his greatest strength, a success rate of 77.9% is still slightly above the norm.
There’s no question that he has improved as a penalty taker in his later years, even though since moving to Inter Miami, he has frequently preferred to let others take the penalties.
He has attempted 145 penalties in total, scoring 113 and missing 32.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo – 34 missed opportunities
Having failed to score on four of the last 16 penalties he has attempted in the past 12 months, Ronaldo now holds the record for the highest number of missed penalties in football history.
His most recent attempt was against Ireland, where Brentford’s Caoimhin Kelleher stopped him from 12 yards.
In addition to holding the record for the most missed penalties in football history, Ronaldo has also netted more goals than anyone else (177) and has taken more penalties than any other player in history (211).
Although he missed 34 attempts, his success rate of 83.8% remains significantly higher than the average.
