Erling Haalandhas set a new record as the quickest footballer to score 50 international goals, breaking the previous mark held by Harry Kane and Neymar.
The Norwegian forward has set numerous goal-scoring records during his career, but this achievement is perhaps his most remarkable.
In today’s time, these are the seven athletes who achieved 50 international goals in the least number of matches.
7. Cristiano Ronaldo – 114 matches
Cristiano Ronaldo has become the top goal scorer in the history of international football with 141 goals, although it took him some time to reach this milestone.
Having spent his early career as a winger, CR7 didn’t start scoring frequently for the national team until approximately 2013.
6. Lionel Messi – 107 matches
Messi netted his 50th international goal in March 2016 while playing in a World Cup qualification match against Bolivia.
It initially took him six matches before he netted his first goal for Argentina, but from that point on, he hasn’t stopped.
He currently holds the record as the county’s top scorer of all time and is the second highest goal scorer in international football, coming just after Ronaldo.
=4. Robert Lewandowski – 90 matches
In terms of scoring goals, Lewandowski often ranks among the best.
He achieved 50 goals for Poland in just 90 games, surpassing both Messi and Ronaldo in reaching that milestone.
As of now, he has netted 86 goals in international competitions, placing him as the seventh top scorer in the history of international football.
=4. Kylian Mbappe – 90 matches
It also required Mbappe 90 games to score 50 international goals.
His 50th goal was scored against Germany in the summer during a Nations League match, which France won 2-0.
The Frenchman is currently tied for sixth in the all-time top scorers at the World Cup and consistently performs well when representing France.
3. Neymar – 74 games
Neymar reached the milestone of his 50th goal for Brazil in November 2016 when he was 24 years old.
At that time, he was the quickest player to score 50 international goals, but he has now been overtaken by two other players.
Although top-tier achievements have eluded the Brazilian on the global level, his significance to football in Brazil remains undeniable.
He holds the nation’s all-time scoring record, having netted 79 goals in 128 matches.
2. Harry Kane – 71 games
In June 2022, Kane surpassed Neymar’s achievement by netting his 50th goal for England in his 71st appearance.
A 32-year-old player made his international debut in 2015 and has continued to find the net consistently, scoring an average of 0.68 goals per match.
Kane was the quickest player to reach 50 international goals for more than three years, but he has since been overtaken.
1. Erling Haaland – 46 games
Not only has Haaland surpassed the record, but he has completely shattered it.
He achieved his 50th goal for Norway in his 46th international match, which means he reached that milestone 25 games faster than Kane.
It’s particularly remarkable when you take into account that Haaland is not part of a top-tier national team, unlike most other players on this list.
Given the rate at which he is scoring, he is nearly certain to be the fastest player to reach 100 international goals within a few years.
