Pakistan, Oct. 14 — Severe rainfall in Mexico has led to fatal floods and landslides, resulting in almost 130 people dead or unaccounted for. Intense downpours affected multiple areas last week, causing rivers to overflow and damaging homes. The government reported 64 fatalities with 65 others still missing. The heavy rains in Mexico were caused by a tropical depression that occurred near the end of the rainy season. Meteorologists stated the storm’s strength was unexpected.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the rainfall was significantly more intense than anticipated. She mentioned that the tropical system hit areas already saturated from prolonged periods of rain. Admiral Raymundo Morales from the Mexican Navy noted that the flooding was caused by a combination of warm and cold air masses. These met over rivers that were overflowing and mountains that had been compromised by previous rainfall, leading to extensive damage.

Approximately 100,000 residences were affected in multiple states. The president stated that she will hold discussions with the finance ministry to outline reconstruction plans. She also pledged to visit the areas most severely impacted in the near future. Civil protection coordinator Laura Velazquez indicated that Hidalgo and Veracruz experienced the greatest damage. Veracruz reported 29 fatalities and 18 individuals unaccounted for, whereas Hidalgo recorded 21 deaths and 43 missing persons.

Bridges, highways, and entire communities suffered damage due to the intense rainfall in Mexico. Footage captured rescuers walking through water up to their waists to reach people in need. Emergency personnel are tirelessly working around the clock to rescue families and provide assistance. Thousands of workers are assisting in clearing muddy streets and restoring vital services.

Power has been restored in most regions, although health dangers still persist. Officials are now concentrating on stopping illnesses such as dengue, which is transmitted by mosquitoes that multiply in still water.
