Pakistan, October 14 — At least 40 individuals, among them citizens from Malawi and Zimbabwe, were killed when a passenger bus plunged down a slope in South Africa, according to a provincial transport minister on Monday. The vehicle, heading towards Zimbabwe, crashed approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles) from the border on Sunday after the driver seemingly lost control, stated Limpopo province’s transport minister, Violet Mathye. “They are still working at the site, but 40 bodies have already been confirmed as of now,” Mathye informed Newzroom Afrika. She mentioned that one of the deceased was a 10-month-old girl. Thirty-eight people were hospitalized, and rescuers were continuing their search for additional victims, she added to eNCA media. The bus was traveling from Gqeberha, a city in the south, roughly 1,500 kilometers away, with its passengers comprising Malawians and Zimbabweans who were employed in South Africa. The crash might have resulted from driver exhaustion or a mechanical issue, the minister noted. South Africa possesses an advanced and heavily used road system, characterized by a significant number of road fatalities, primarily attributed to speeding, reckless driving, and vehicles in poor condition.
