Pakistan, October 14 — Australia achieved a remarkable one-day international chase, with Alyssa Healy’s impressive 142 runs leading the defending champions to a three-wicket victory against India on Sunday.

Australia secured a win with 331 runs, achieving their goal six balls remaining as Ellyse Perry helped her team finish with an unbeaten 47 along with Kim Garth.

Their third win in four games saw Australia take the lead in the rankings, while India, the hosts, dropped to third place following their second consecutive loss, after previously losing to South Africa.

Healy established the pace of the chase, starting with a quick partnership alongside Phoebe Litchfield and then forming a key collaboration with Ashleigh Gardner (45) before getting out, leaving Australia needing 66 runs from 68 balls.

Perry, who had previously withdrawn due to cramps, came back late in the innings to lead Australia to victory.

“Very proud of the team. A bit challenging towards the end. We’ve been emphasizing the depth in our lineup, the fact that we could chase 330 (which we proved),” Healy said.

Great credit to our bowlers for making a comeback; we could have been chasing over 360. I was aiming to have a big day. It was fantastic to make a significant contribution, though I would have preferred to stay a little longer, but the girls managed to get the job done.

The ODI run chase surpassed the 302 scored by Sri Lanka to defeat South Africa in Potchefstroom in April 2024.

Previously, Smriti Mandhana (80) and Pratika Rawal (75) formed a 155-run opening partnership, helping India reach a substantial score. However, they then lost nine wickets for just 138 runs, ending at 330. Annabel Sutherland’s five-wicket performance started their downfall.

Left-arm spinner N Shree Charani made an impact for India by taking 3 wickets for 41 runs, yet Healy’s outstanding century—her first as captain and third in a World Cup—proved crucial, allowing Australia to maintain their advantage in the competition.
