Israel observed the second anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel that occurred on 7 October 2023 through an official event held on the corresponding date in the Jewish calendar.

Prominent officials in the nation, such as President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Parliament Speaker Amir Ohana, attended the commemorations and delivered speeches at the gathering.

In his speech, Netanyahu promised to encourage more Israeli families to settle in the southern areas that were targeted by Hamas.

In the last two years, many individuals living in these areas have moved to other places, worried that Hamas attacks could happen again.

“We are tasked with a vital national objective to restore the areas near Gaza into a thriving zone of renewal,” stated Netanyahu.

We are allocating significant funds into this initiative and we are already witnessing the outcomes. More than 90% of the residents have come back to most of the impacted neighborhoods. However, we are not content with this,” he stated. “We will introduce new families to those areas. We will set new records for growth.

President Isaac Herzog extended an apology to the victims on behalf of the Israeli government, recognizing that the attacks had “shattered” lives and families, and conveyed hope that everyone impacted will recover.

“I can only hold you close, apologise for the State of Israel, and hope that, on behalf of a whole nation, you discover healing and solace, that we examine the tragedy, and that we prove ourselves deserving of your sacrifice,” he said.

Thousands of attendees witnessed the event, which included a big screen displaying some of the horrors that occurred and the captives seized by Hamas in Gaza.

The Hamas attacks resulted in the deaths of 1,139 individuals as hundreds of militants from the Gaza-based group attacked nearby settlements. They also captured 251 people and took them to Gaza.

Israel carried out a military campaign that spanned slightly more than two years, resulting in the deaths of nearly 68,000 Palestinians, as reported by local health authorities in Gaza.
