Pakistan, October 16 — The Punjab administration, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has chosen to advocate for a national prohibition of an “extremist group” as it initiates a broad-based campaign against incitement, unauthorized arms, and disorder. This action comes after intense confrontations between supporters of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and security forces in Muridke and other areas of Punjab during recent demonstrations.

The TLP’s demonstration in support of Palestinians in Gaza has escalated into violent clashes with law enforcement and Rangers. Key highways connecting Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad have been obstructed, causing disruptions to transportation and everyday activities. It has been reported that some TLP members were killed, while numerous police personnel sustained injuries during the turmoil, leading the provincial government to implement emergency actions.

Following a senior meeting led by CM Maryam, the government released a statement detailing stringent measures. It did not specify the party, but mentioned that a formal suggestion will be submitted to the federal government for a prohibition. The group’s leadership will be included in the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act, with its properties transferred to the Auqaf Department. The government also intends to freeze its banking accounts and restrict social media profiles.

The declaration mentioned that individuals engaging in hate speech, violence, or incitement will be detained. Those accountable for the death of police officers or damage to property will be charged with terrorism. The punishment for possessing illegal weapons has increased to 14 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs2 million. Officials have been instructed to confiscate all illegal weapons and conduct inspections of licensed firearms dealers throughout the province.
