In Spain, the Chamber of Deputies approved a resolution on Thursday, October 16, opposing the agricultural deal between Morocco and the European Union, which involves goods from Western Sahara.

The plan, proposed by the far-right party Vox, was met withunexpected backingComing from the far-left coalition Sumar, a member of the ruling majority, as well as from the leading opposition party, the People’s Party (PP). This unusual alignment between political extremes enabled the motion to be approved.

On the other hand, the PSOE (Socialist Party), the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Bildu, Podemos, Junts, the Canary Coalition, and the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) opposed Vox’s proposal.

The revised text emphasizes the need to respect the decisions made by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on October 4, 2024, which determined that applying the EU-Morocco Association Agreement to Western Sahara was unlawful.

It also calls on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration to reject any changes to the Morocco-EU agreement that would grant favorable treatment to goods from Western Sahara.

The lower house also states that no trade or fishing agreement should be applicable to the territory without the approval of its residents, in accordance with the European legal principles set on October 4, 2024.
