The Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly condemned former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for making every topic a subject of politics and propaganda.

On Thursday, during the inauguration of the newly constructed Esther Bali Street and Kez Udezue Street in Mabushi District, Abuja, Wike stated that leadership should focus on outcomes, rather than performance or media appearances.

His comments followed Obi’s recent trip to the LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, where the former governor voiced dissatisfaction with the school’s deteriorating state and the lack of restroom facilities.

Wike criticized Obi for publicly commenting on the matter rather than informing him or the appropriate officials privately, highlighting that true leaders address issues, not create unnecessary attention.

It’s not everything that needs to be turned into a political issue,” Wike stated. “Peter Obi, you were in charge of Anambra State for eight years. If you had finished all the essential projects back then, people wouldn’t still be discussing development in Anambra today.

Wike claimed that Obi failed to address the needs of Anambra’s residents, instead leaving public money in banks to earn interest.

He stated, “Rather than utilizing Anambra’s funds to enhance schools, hospitals, and public facilities, you stored it in Fidelity Bank, where you held a substantial ownership. You generated income while the populace endured hardship. That is not true leadership.”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory drew a comparison between his two years in office and Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor. “We have only been in the FCT for two years, yet Nigerians can observe the progress we’ve achieved. Compare that with your eight years in Anambra. Can you genuinely claim to love Nigeria or the people of Anambra? Definitely not.”

He recommended that Obi concentrate on offering valuable insights instead of trying to gain public compassion via symbolic actions such as visiting internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

If I were you, I’d remain silent,” Wike stated. “You can’t become President simply because you visit IDP camps or attend birthday events. Celebrating your birthday in an IDP camp doesn’t indicate that you love Nigeria.

Did you ever mark your birthday while serving as governor? Now that you’re out of office, you’re suddenly trying to seem caring? Who do you think you’re fooling?

Wike ended by stating that leadership should focus on real outcomes that enhance people’s lives rather than attention-seeking actions.

He called on politicians, particularly those aiming to govern the nation, to concentrate on addressing issues instead of chasing publicity.

Stop all this theatrics,” he remarked. “Real leaders are known for what they create, not for where they pose for photos.
