Morocco intends to implement a digital system for registering organ donors as part of a fresh national initiative aimed at increasing involvement in what authorities refer to as a slow-moving humanitarian campaign.
The Justice Minister, Abdellatif Ouahbi, stated on Thursday that the number of registered organ donors increased from 42 in 2022 to 149 in 2024, which he described as a small rise and called “not enough” for a nation with 36 million people. Ouahbi pointed out that Morocco had only 564 organ donations between 2013 and 2022, and encouraged consideration of why public awareness is still low.
At a conference hosted by the National Advisory Council for Human Organ Transplantation in Rabat, Ouahbi revealed intentions to introduce a digital registration platform enabling residents to enroll remotely through their phones or the internet. The initiative seeks to streamline what he referred to as a “bureaucratic and obsolete” procedure that currently necessitates in-person court appearances.
“We aim to enable registration via digital methods while maintaining privacy and secure handling,” Ouahbi stated, noting that technical discussions will take place in the upcoming weeks to complete the framework.
The campaign aligns with Morocco’s National Organ Donation Day, observed annually on October 17, and is a component of wider initiatives aimed at creating a long-term, ethically sound transplantation program.
