The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, called on its appropriate committees to look into the reported conflicts between inhabitants of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe N’ugu in Edo State and the residents of Mosogar in Delta State.
Since 1991, following the establishment and clear definition of the borders between Edo State and Delta State, the people from both communities and states along the border have maintained peaceful coexistence until recently.
The latest conflict is reportedly due to the residents of Mosogar, who, as per Osawaru, “initiated an unwarranted invasion and assault by criminals and rowdies on Edo communities.”
During a motion of urgent public importance in the plenary session, Billy Osawaru, the representative of Orhionmwon/Uhunmwude Federal Constituency in Edo State, highlighted that the residents of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe-N’ugu Communities within Orhionmwon Local Government Area have “lived peacefully in the oil exploration zone of Orhionmwon LGA without experiencing fear, intimidation, or any form of crisis, and they share common borders with Delta State, especially along the Mosogar axis of the state.”
An Edo state representative cautioned that if the “unjustified and unprovoked intrusion by individuals from Mosogar and Delta State as a whole into the territories and villages of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe-N’ugu within the Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State continues, it could result in a widespread inter-state conflict, endangering the country’s peace and stability.”
He further stated, “If decisive measures are not implemented to halt this invasion and assault from the Mosogar people, it could escalate into a large-scale inter-state conflict, which would subsequently endanger the peace and stability of the country as a whole.”
When the motion was put to a voice vote, those present at the plenary session voted by a large margin in favor, and the House directed its Committees on Special Duties and National Security and Intelligence to examine the incident and provide a report within four weeks.
It also called on the appropriate security organizations, such as the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the National Intelligence Agency, to swiftly act in order to restore harmony and safeguard the lives and assets of the impacted communities.
The House also called on the Edo and Delta State Governments to speed up efforts in settling the conflict via discussion and shared comprehension without any additional delay.
