The Polisario Front stated in a declaration from the organization that it is “willing to participate in direct, sincere, and genuine talks with the Kingdom of Morocco, without any conditions and under the supervision of the United Nations, to achieve a fair, peaceful, and enduring resolution” to the Sahara dispute.
The statement was made through a letter delivered on Monday by Brahim Ghali, head of the Polisario Front, to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as the UN Security Council gets ready to examine the terms of MINURSO.
The Front emphasized its willingness to engage in talks with Morocco to reach “a resolution that ensures the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and brings back regional peace and stability, in accordance with pertinent UN resolutions,” according to the same source.
This is not the first instance where the Polisario has demonstrated a desire to engage in talks with Morocco aimed at achieving a peaceful and enduring resolution, yet the recent statement indicates a change in tone, now referring to Morocco as the Kingdom of Morocco instead of using more confrontational language.
This aligns with recent events and conversations at the UN Security Council this month regarding the Sahara matter, as part of the discussions on extending the MINURSO peacekeeping mission’s authorization.
Earlier reports stated that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, urged, during a private UN Security Council session on October 10, for renewed discussions among Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania by the end of 2025.
The official highlighted the importance of all four sides participating in discussions, noting that “no peace initiative can thrive without the readiness to go beyond long-standing historical stances.”
