The Senate has approved the second stage of a bill aimed at amending the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Act, which intends to eliminate “Technology” from the university’s name and reclassify it as a traditional institution.
The bill, named Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (Amendment) Bill 2025 (SB 910), seeks to expand the institution’s scope beyond science and technology, enabling it to offer programs in law, social sciences, and other non-technical fields.
This advancement was featured in a NASS TV video from Tuesday’s full meeting, obtained by our reporter.
.
The legislation, introduced by Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchi South), successfully underwent the second reading and has been sent to the Senate Committee on Higher Education Institutions and TETFund for additional legal processing.
The panel is anticipated to provide updates within a month.
Chairing the meeting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the proposer and recognized the backing from other legislators, pointing out that the Senate had earlier approved comparable changes for other specialized organizations.
Let me express my gratitude to Distinguished Senator Shehu Buba for raising this issue, and I also appreciate all Distinguished Senators who have shared their input. It’s not only about contributing; I am aware that this respected chamber renamed the former Rivers State University of Science and Technology to Rivers State University, transforming it into a standard university following its acquisition by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“So I hope that following the public hearing, everyone will be united in their approach so we can move forward from there. I appreciate all of you for your input,” he stated.
Akpabio’s statements emphasized the Senate’s ongoing commitment to modernize specialized universities and broaden their academic offerings to align with national requirements.
If enacted into law, the amendment will officially change the name of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and grant it the authority to function as a general institution providing a wider array of academic courses.
Established in 1981, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University is a federal technological institution situated in Bauchi, which is in the northeastern region of Nigeria.
The institution is called in honor of Nigeria’s first and sole prime minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
The university’s slogan is “Doctrina Mater Artium,” translating to “Education is the mother of the practical arts.”
