The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged the Federal Government to implement rules governing social media usage.
Sultan cautioned that the uncontrolled dissemination of misleading information presents a serious threat to the country’s peace and security.
Addressing the General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi, the Sultan expressed worry about the rapid spread of false information on the internet, noting that many Nigerians often accept and act upon unconfirmed material.
“It’s time for the government to impose regulations on social media within the nation. The proliferation of false information is perilous and needs to be tackled,” he stated.
The ruler praised the Nigerian military for their dedication to bringing stability throughout the country, particularly in areas affected by robbery and lawlessness.
He observed that their ongoing efforts enabled the council’s meeting to take place in Kebbi.
I strongly reject some of the severe criticisms aimed at our armed forces due to specific challenges. They are striving to bring back safety to various regions of the country.
“Such criticism is unhelpful. Rather, it demoralizes those risking their lives to ensure our security,” he said.
In his comments, the Vice Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and Emir of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, highlighted that the assembly’s theme, “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria,” emphasized the significance of discussion and partnership in addressing instability.
Elkanemi emphasized the essential function of traditional institutions in fostering peace using non-military methods, referring to them as a key connection between governmental bodies and local populations.
The event was graced by Governor Nasir Idris from Kebbi State, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Etsu Nupe, along with various other respected traditional leaders from the northern part of the country.
This is occurring just a week after the Sultan urged solidarity among Muslims while highlighting thatsocial mediais a means of fostering division and animosity and requires control.
He also voiced worry that inflammatory religious speeches, along with the spread of unconfirmed data on social media, have intensified splits and weakened trust within societies.
