Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s leading football team, Simba SC, has been selected as one of the top ten clubs vying for the CAF Club of the Year Award, which is considered one of the most respected honors in African football.
Besides the club’s acknowledgment, Shomari Kapombe from Simba is among the ten players shortlisted for CAF’s Interclub Player of the Year award.
The list also features Fiston Mayele, a former striker from Young Africans (Yanga) of the Democratic Republic of Congo, currently playing for Pyramids FC in Egypt. Additional candidates include Ismail Belkacemi, Blati Toure, Issoufou Dayo, Emam Ashour, Ibrahim Adel, Mohamed Hrimat, Mohamed Chibi, and Oussama Lamlioui.
The date and location of the award event have not been revealed yet. Simba, who secured a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup last year, came very close to winning the title but fell short against the Moroccan team RS Berkane, losing 3-1 in total during the final.
This is the second occasion that Simba has been nominated for the award, having initially been acknowledged in 2024 along with their conventional opponents, Young Africans (Yanga SC).
Yanga, who also failed to secure the CAF Confederation Cup in 2023, was eliminated by USM Alger on aggregate after a 2-1 loss at home at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and a 1-0 victory in Algeria, underlining how close the competition can be.
Other teams nominated for this year’s CAF Club of the Year Award are CR Belouizdad and CS Constantine from Algeria, Asec Mimosas from Ivory Coast, Pyramids FC from Egypt, RS Berkane from Morocco, and three South African clubs: Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Stellenbosch FC. Al Hilal, a prominent Sudanese team, round out the list.
This year, the seven-time champion Al Ahly from Egypt is missing, a team that has been dominant in recent years, securing the title back-to-back in 2023 and 2024.
