When the Cape Town Marathonwas called off because of strong winds, leaving thousands of runners feeling let down.

For the majority, this meant returning home and allowing the day to end. However, forFrancois van Coke, the frontman of Fokofpolisiekar, it meant putting on his running shoes regardless.

Van Coke chose to run 42 kilometers by himself and set a goal: to collect R1 for each meter he covered, with the aim of raising R42,000 for Breadline Africa, a non-profit group that constructs early childhood education centers throughout South Africa.

The money will support the development of a secure play area at ATKV Abbasorg Educare Centre in Cloetesville, allowing kids to play, climb, and discover without restrictions.

I wasn’t going to let that hold me back,” Van Coke stated. “I was running to collect money for a new playground and jungle gym for the children, and I’m committed to seeing it through regardless.

On the day of the marathon, rather than quitting, Van Coke ran through the residential areas. For him, the cancellation led to a fresh concept instead of ruining his plans.

“On November 6, 2025, on the day of the official transfer of the new center, I will be running from Bellville to Cloetesville to maintain the momentum,” he stated.

Many thanks to all who have already contributed to helping me achieve approximately 40% of my target. Your assistance is invaluable and motivates me to keep moving forward. Let’s reach the finish line as one.

Support has already started to come in. Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels surprised him with a R10,000 contribution towards his fundraising target. Since then, he has managed to raise an extra R9,000.

Van Coke characterized the time when the marathon was called off as unexpected.

I was extremely let down, naturally. I put in a lot of training, felt completely prepared, confident, and excited for the marathon. I was also sad that I couldn’t run to help raise the remaining funds needed for Abbasorg.

It was a matter of personal significance to him.

“I have two young children and I recognize their requirements, and since I care for them deeply and they enhance my life, I’m really excited to assist and make a difference in the lives of other children in any way possible,” he stated.

Even though the individual run was enjoyable, Van Coke acknowledged that finishing the marathon would have held greater significance.

No, the solo run was enjoyable, but it would have been far more significant to complete the Cape Town Marathon correctly.

His decision to select a fundraising partner was deliberate.

I have collaborated with Breadline Africa on several occasions to support fundraising for their initiatives. I was contacted by an individual associated with the organization, and I instantly felt a connection to their mission. If I can assist a child in any minor way, I consider myself very fortunate.

Apart from his musical endeavors, running has been a constant in Van Coke’s life for over ten years. He started running long distances during the Covid-19 pandemic and kept up with marathons after that.

It’s something I require in my life right now. It offers me freedom and tranquility for a few hours each week. I run whenever possible during my tours. I’ve been fortunate to run in New Zealand, Australia, China, England, and the Netherlands this year. It’s also an excellent way to explore a city.
