Security officials in Fez detained a motorist on Tuesday night who caused the death of a 17-year-old boy when he hit him during festivities celebrating Morocco’s under-20 national team’s World Cup triumph.
The individual under suspicion was captured close to a hotel located on Hassan II Street, one day following their escape from the location of the deadly collision, which took place in front of a café on Safrou Road within the Saiss area.
The arrest came after an inquiry conducted by the judicial police, supported by video surveillance and information from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), which allowed officials to determine the driver’s identity and monitor his movements, as reported by Assabah newspaper.
It was discovered through investigations that the driver, along with others, was speeding and traveling the wrong way when he hit the victim, who was trying to cross the road approximately at 2:30 a.m. The teenager suffered serious injuries and eventually passed away after being taken to the emergency department at Hassan II University Hospital Center.
The deceased, a high school pupil, had viewed the last game with his relatives prior to stepping out to meet a companion. The pair were on their way to the downtown area by motorcycle when they chose to return, just moments before the fast-moving vehicle struck him, resulting in his untimely death in a heartbreaking incident.
