Buriram United suffered an opening loss under their new manager Mark Jackson when the Thunder Castle lost 2-1 to Melbourne City in an AFC Champions League Elite match held at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Australia on Tuesday.

Goran Causic put the Thai League 1 champions ahead in the 72nd minute, but Elbasan Rashani, a recent addition to Melbourne City, equalized in the 84th minute. Then, Max Caputo scored the decisive goal for Aurelio Vidmar’s team during the added time at the end of the match.

Caputo’s goal helped his team accumulate three points from three games in the eastern zone league, tying with Buriram United, who have now suffered two consecutive losses, including their first under new coach Jackson.

In the fourth minute, Buriram’s goalkeeper Neil Etheridge had to rush out quickly to stop an early chance for Caputo, the Philippine international, as he prevented the young player from scoring with a close-range save following a pass into the box by Kavian Rahmani.

Buriram United believed they had scored the opening goal three minutes into the first half stoppage time when Causic headed in Peter Zulj’s free-kick from the right, which curved toward the goal, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call following a VAR review.

Causic scored with 18 minutes left, as the Serbian midfielder seized the opportunity to shoot into the top corner from close range following Patrick Beach’s save of Zulj’s first attempt.

Melbourne City equalized with six minutes left when substitute Rashani headed in a cross from their captain Aziz Behich.

Caputo then moved in to score the winning goal seven minutes into added time.

Battle of winless sides

In the Group F of the AFC Champions League Two, Thailand’s Ratchaburi will face Eastern FC from Hong Kong on Wednesday, with both sides requiring a victory to maintain their chances of advancing in the knockout stage.

The game is scheduled to take place at Ratchaburi Stadium and will start at 7:15 PM.

Ratchaburi are still seeking their initial victory in the ACL Two, just like their opponents Eastern FC.
