One of the initial principles we learn when stepping onto the golf course is about proper conduct. A reprimand from my father during our first game together taught me just how crucial this fundamental rule is. Etiquette involves fixing grass patches and ball indentations, raking sand traps, and being considerate of other players by staying silent and motionless while they are taking their shots. Additionally, the game’s etiquette guidelines emphasize being aware of keeping a steady pace and letting quicker groups pass through.
I would like to point out that etiquette was absent in the recent Ryder Cup games, with many former players being upset by the conduct of spectators (and some players). The negative impression remaining after everything settled will persist until the next match in Ireland in 2027. As we all know, the most challenging aspect of our game is to stay smiling and polite after a triple bogey, yet this is one of the reasons golf stands out — it teaches you quickly to manage your emotions effectively.
If your golf ball is in an unplayable position, you have three choices, each carrying a one-stroke penalty. These choices include playing the ball again from where you last hit it (stroke and distance), dropping the ball on the line extending from the hole through the original position, as far back as you want, or dropping the ball within two club lengths of the original spot but not nearer to the hole (lateral relief).
Beyond the Rules: One of the most amusing moments that I and my fellow players saw on a particular day involved a disgruntled and overlooked member who was unfortunately grouped with us. He took a drop and lost his ball. This occurred during a time when players were required to drop the ball behind their back. He was wearing a jacket with a hood that was loosely hanging at the back. The ball landed in the hood and vanished. When he turned around, he was surprised to find his ball missing from the ground. Without a doubt, we all laughed uncontrollably as we watched him and delayed informing him of what had happened for as long as possible.
