Sri Lanka, October 23 — Upali Hewage, the former Deputy Inspector General of Police, who was a member of the Thurstan College First XV rugby team for three years between 1966 and 1968 and led the team in his last year, later held the positions of Vice President and Secretary at the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), died on Tuesday at the age of 76.

His body is now housed at Raymond’s Parlour in Borella. The funeral is scheduled to be held today (Thursday) at 4:00 p.m. at the General Cemetery, Borella.

Born in 1949, Hewage was an exceptional rugby player who left a significant impact on the sport at Thurstan College. He later became President of the Thurstan College Rugby Wing and was instrumental in leading the school to victory in the highly coveted President’s Trophy in 2005.

He was also a dedicated member of the Thurstan College Old Boys’ Union (OBU), holding various positions and making significant contributions to the development and cohesion of his former institution.

As the Secretary of the FFSL, Hewage made significant contributions to the growth of football throughout the nation. His dedicated work to elevate the sport was highly recognized by FFSL officials, and he was greatly respected for fostering a friendly and professional connection with the media during his entire career.
