Sri Lanka, Oct. 23 — Nuren Wevita and Navya Banagala from Sri Lanka secured impressive wins as the ATF Under-14 C2 Colombo Week 1 Tennis Tournament progressed at the SLTA hard courts in Colombo, held by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association yesterday.
Wevita, demonstrating strong foundational control and self-assurance, overpowered Finland’s Tiltus Murto with a decisive score of 4-2, 4-0 in a dominant boys’ second-round encounter. Banagala also maintained calmness in the girls’ bracket, overcoming fellow Sri Lankan player Manuli Seneviratne with a result of 4-0, 4-1, advancing to the next stage.
In different matches, India’s Nihal S. Reddy managed to win a close three-set contest, defeating Sri Lanka’s Rahail Fernandusz with scores of 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, while Hong Kong’s James Won and Shun Wing Leung each achieved straight-set victories over Kashya Seneviratne and Muhammed Thariq respectively.
Among the female players, India’s Haritshwari Chinnakavanam won a tough tie-breaker against Eranya Rahulan with scores of 4-5, 5-4, 11/9, while her fellow countrywoman Wazooha Khan triumphed over Chanuli Pinnalwatte in an engaging match with results of 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. Sri Lanka’s Setuli Mutugama also progressed easily by beating Thishya Banagala 4-0, 4-1.
The competition, showcasing elite young athletes from Sri Lanka, India, Hong Kong, and Finland, will take place today and conclude on October 26 at the SLTA facilities.
